Basecamp Essential
Eligibility Criteria (EEC)
Camp Wojtyla is a wilderness camp. That means life here looks different than at home, and campers must be ready for rustic living, teamwork, and outdoor adventure. Families should carefully review the following expectations together before registering.
-
Each participant must be able to:
Follow verbal directions from group leaders.
Signal or notify leaders if in distress, injured, or needing help.
Act reliably around hazards (loose rock, cliff edges, moving water, wild animals).
-
Each participant must be able to:
Work effectively as a team member, even in challenging conditions.
Contribute to a safe learning environment (no verbal/physical mistreatment of others).
Communicate ideas and concerns at individual and group levels.
Respect and participate in a Christian, faith-based environment (Catholic practice not required, but respect is expected).
-
Each participant must be able to:
Stay hydrated, fed, and dressed appropriately to prevent environmental illness or injury.
Move around camp to attend activities, use the restroom, and help with group tasks.
Live in teepees or tents for 6–9 uninterrupted days in conditions that may include:
Cold (<40ºF) or hot (>90ºF)
Rain, snow, hail, strong sun, or wind
Hike on trails while carrying a small backpack, requiring average strength, endurance, balance, and agility.
-
Campers in this program must also be able to:
Hike rugged, uneven, steep, or sloping terrain (including boulder fields, snow, and vegetation).
Hike distances ranging from less than 1 mile to 8+ miles/day (1–6+ hours/day).
-
Camp Wojtyla is remote; advanced medical care may be 30+ minutes away in clear weather.
-
Parents (and campers 18+) will be asked to sign the following at registration:
“I have read and understand the living conditions and expectations of Camp Wojtyla programs. If my child (or I) cannot meet these conditions, I understand that Camp Wojtyla staff have the right to send the participant home early.”
